Flash and Zoom

I got a number of photos in the paper this week, the one posted below amongst them. Shooting press conferences provides photographers with the great opportunity to play around in the field without missing the action.

I took this image on a slow shutter speed using my external flash. As I depressed the shutter, I twisted the zoom ring, and it created this great effect. I learn so much in the field simply by experimenting.

During the school year I don’t really have time to concentrate on everything, so I end up dividing my time. As a result, I don’t get to spend nearly as much time photographing as I would like to. Or nearly as much time reading. Or doing any other number of things I wish I could be doing. It has been a great relief in South Africa to just concentrate on photographing, and I really wish I didn’t have to go back home. Here it’s all photojournalism, all the time.

One of the guys in the picture office took this of me. Even when we’re not out on assignment, we’re in the office talking about photos. (I’m also trying to learn a bit of Xhosa and Afrikaans.)

The other night I stood in my flat and watched as the night sky got darker and darker. I whipped out my camera and tripod and photographed. It has become more of a natural inclination. Here is one of the images that I produced. This is the view from my flat at night. I look toward the hills.

I can feel winter setting in. It’s colder today than it was two weeks ago. I promise to keep updating images of the view from my flat. I’m never at home when the sun sets, so this was a rare instance.
