What Potential
I photographed a change of command ceremony in Simon’s Town today. The captain of the ship went through the ceremonial motions when he handed command of the ship over to the new captain. After the speeches had ended, the old captain got into a row boat and was rowed around the frigate he had commanded, so that his crew could say goodbye.
What potential the shoot had. The above image was just a few seconds off perfect. Just as the boat moved into the right part of the photo, all the sailors put their caps back on. Without them lifting their caps up, it’s just not The Photo. This just wasn’t the “decisive moment” that makes photojournalism so powerful.
